2018 vets roll event | may 20-23

ORS participates with Vets Roll, a tribute to Veterans. Vets Roll is a local charity assisting WWII Vets, Korean Era Veterans and Rosies-the-Rivers with travel. The ORS Rockford clinic staff can “dress casual for the cause” wearing a camouflage ribbon pinned to our shirts with a US flag pin. Participants place one dollar in the “Vets Roll” jar at the Front Desk for each day we dress casual.  Feel free to join us in spirit with donations for this great local cause. These donations go towards providing a Vet the opportunity of visiting Washington, DC to see war memorials created in their honor at zero cost to them!

Please see the VetsRoll site for more details: http://www.vetsroll.org/Home/OurStory.aspx

Orthopedic Rehab Specialists Mallory McFarlane attended Spinal Manipulation Institute; Dry Needling

Mallory McFarlane, PT, DPT

Mallory McFarlane
PT, DPT, OCS

Physical Therapist Mallory McFarlane attended Spinal Manipulation Institute; Dry Needling. High quality evidence shows that spinal manipulation has a clinically relevant effect on pain and disability in patients with acute and chronic low back pain; furthermore, patients with low back pain who do not receive lumbopelvic HVLA thrust manipulation as part of treatment are 8 times more likely to experience a worsening in disability than those patients who do receive spinal manipulation. Additionally, HVLA thrust manipulation of the sacrum has been found to increase the strength and basal tonus of the pelvic floor muscles; and sacroiliac joint manipulation has been shown to improve the feed-forward activation timing of the transverse abdominus muscle. Nevertheless, within the emerging literature, the combination of spinal manipulation and dry needling is showing the most promise for “best practice” models in a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. This is the “Osteopractic” approach in essence—the combination of spinal manipulation, extremity manipulation, and dry needling for the evidence-based treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Fear of Football: Schools step up concussion
care in recent years

Athletic Trainer, Aaron Engel
Aaron Engel, MS, ATC

Lindsay Augustine, MS, ATC
Lindsay Augustine, MS, ATC

Aaron Engel usually only needs to look in a player’s eyes.

“I know most of them well enough, I can just tell,” the Stillman Valley trainer said. “If they have that glossy, glazed look, then that’s the first sign.”

Engel, a certified athletic trainer for Orthopedic Rehab Specialists, is one of dozens of high school trainers in the area whose job is to be the first responder when a head injury occurs. He determines if a player is well enough to return to the game, or if it is something more severe.

And with so much attention on concussions at the professional level in recent years, trainers have never been so careful.

“All the awareness has been so recent, the research is still short term and there are still a lot of questions,” he said. “But there’s obviously something to it. It needs to be addressed.”

The Illinois High School Association passed a rule in 2010 that athletes in all sports cannot return to practice or a game after any kind of head injury until they are passed by either a certified athletic trainer or a physician licensed to practice medicine in Illinois.

The rule became a state law for all athletes at all levels in 2011.

Of course, what one doctor says could be different than what another might determine. That’s why things like the ImPACT Test come into play.

“There are a couple out there, but the ImPACT is the one everyone uses,” said Winnebago trainer Lindsay Augustine. “It’s fantastic to have that extra diagnostic equipment at my disposal. It’s not just me saying, ‘I think something is wrong.’ It’s an objective measurement.”

The way it works is this: Schools purchase the ImPACT software, and packages can range anywhere from $350 for a package of 75 baseline tests and 25 post-injury tests, to $750 for 500 baseline tests and 150 post injury tests. Schools may also use the ImPACT test by going through a clinic and paying approximately $10 per baseline and $20 post injury for one athlete...

DAVID BLACK'S expertise FOR "this is why" on pt in motion

Jenna Villafuerte, PTA

PITCHING COACH
An unexpected call-up to the big leagues.

By David Black, PT, MS, OCS
April 2012

I enjoy working with people. It's really that simple. Having grown up as a sports nut, it seems to me now that physical therapy and I were destined to meet. I knew early on that I wanted to help people overcome injuries and lead active lives, but physical therapy's combination of direct, hands-on care and the opportunity to achieve tangible results sealed the deal for me.

I've always loved what I do, but every so often a situation pops up that truly is special. The one I'm thinking of right now happened last year. Bill Shannon (click to see video and images for Bill Shannon) is a retired local businessman and former patient of mine who's in his 70s. He's just about the biggest fan of the Chicago Cubs you'll ever meet—he's been attending home games at Wrigley Field for nearly 60 years, and he still makes it to about 40 games a season. Bill and I are friends, and I've attended some ballgames with him. That's quite an experience. It seems as if everyone at Wrigley knows and loves Bill.

physical therapy boosts quality of life for cancer patients

ROCKFORD — For decades, chemotherapy and radiation have been synonymous with cancer treatment. Officials at the oncology rehab centers in Rockford and Dixon say that in the past 10 to 15 years a third component of treatment has emerged — physical therapy.

“A lot of cancer treatment centers across the country are making physical therapy a part of their protocol,” said Jenna Villafuerte, a physical therapist assistant at ORS Physical Therapy at 2662 McFarland Road in Rockford. “Many cancer patients automatically receive physical therapy. Lance Armstrong had a lot to do with that.”

Courts Reject CMS's Medicare "Improvement Standard"

Two federal district courts have rejected, in two separate cases, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) contention that the rehabilitation benefit should be restricted to only those patients who are making "improvement". Sometimes known as the "Improvement Standard", the courts found that the Medicare program has improperly denied care based on improper presumption of reasonable and necessary services.

The Medicare Benefit Policy Manual (Publication 100-02) includes language that permits the Medicare program to deny rehabilitation benefits to any beneficiary in therapy that is no longer making improvement or has met his or her maximum potential from therapy. Two recent federal district court decisions have rejected this position, sometimes known as the "Improvement Standard", finding the position unsupportable. The courts relied on regulatory language that states, "a patient may need skilled service to prevent further deterioration or preserve current capabilities" to decide that the denial of coverage could not be affirmed. In one instance a judge stated that the determination of whether skilled services are "reasonable and necessary" is from the "forward-looking vantage point of the physician" and "a patient's chronic or stable condition does not provide a basis for automatically denying coverage for skilled services." The judge noted that stabilization of a beneficiary's health does not render the level of care unnecessary.

The Center for Medicare Advocacy has devoted considerable resources over many years to change CMS policies pertaining to this issue. The Center states that CMS has taken little or no action. The Center is asking to hear from any Medicare beneficiaries who might have been harmed by this policy. Feedback to the Center can be sent to: improvement@medicareadvocacy.org

Rockford, IL - September 2010 - Orthopedic Rehab Specialists Oncology Rehab Program "BUILDING FUTURES" is helping people with cancer improve their quality of life. Our team of oncology rehab therapists, Alane Curry, PT, MTP; Lindsey Nauman, PT, MPT and Jenna Villafuerte, PTA, have advanced training in oncology rehab, allowing them to customize evidence-based programs for their patients. Through all phases of cancer, our aim is to educate, inspire and empower our patients to take an active role in their care, their life and survivorship.

Cancer and cancer treatments including surgery have profound musculoskeletal, functional and cardiovascular effects. Our expert oncology rehab specialists are trained to evaluate and treat pain, cancer-related fatigue, strength deficits, range of motion limitations and soft tissue restrictions. By treating these conditions, patients are more likely to stay on their radiation/chemotherapy schedules without delays, demonstrate improved mobility and strength, experience decreased pain and ultimately improve their quality of life.

Research studies have shown that aerobic exercise helps maintain erthrocyte (red blood cell) levels during radiation treatment and that exercise has been found to be effective in preventing or reducing cancer-related fatigue.

Each of our oncology rehab specialists have been touched by cancer in their families and friends, which drives them further to provide the best care for their patients with compassion, understanding and innovative approaches. ORS is active in the community, working with groups to raise awareness, offer support and provide presentations about the BUILDING FUTURES program and exercise benefits for cancer patients.

Our Services Include:

  • One-on-one patient-centered care
  • Stretching, postural re-education, scar tissue management and manual techniques
  • Lymphedema risk management
  • Cardiovascular strength and endurance training
  • Balance and gait training
  • Injury and fall prevention
  • Patient, family and caregiver education

ORS has physical therapy clinics in Rockford, Byron and Roscoe! For more information on the Oncology Rehab Program at ORS call (815) 277-1700.
